His interest in visual culture began as a young painter and graffiti artist while studying graphic design at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST). He later studied illustration at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) in the UK, and went on to research Vernacular Architecture at the University of Hong Kong. Since then, he has held various creative roles across Malta, London and Spain, including as an art director of brand in the tech industry, and currently divides his time between freelance creative direction, illustration and research. Steven has also been involved in several projects that aim to connect creativity and community. He is a founding member and regular contributor to the&nbsp;Malta Community of Illustrators (MCOl), has organised festivals such as the&nbsp;N15 Street Art Festival in North London in 2015, and led an archival research initiative focused on the history of Maltese graphic art. In 2025, he published the book ‘Tberfil: The art of Maltese vehicular decoration in the 20th century’, the result of an extensive research period that has helped define and establish the Maltese vernacular art form of tberfil. As an artist, his work is inspired by the interplay between vernacular visual culture, natural heritage and personal mythology. He has held exhibitions worldwide, including solo exhibits such as Alphabeticon (London, 2015) and Contracompositions (Valencia, 2018). Between 2016 and 2020, he created and produced a series of modular, handcrafted wooden sculptures called Objekts following a successful Kickstarter campaign. He currently resides in Sicily, where, together with his wife Sara, he is working on setting up a creative residency project centred around contemporary Mediterranean identities. Written and researched by Steven Scicluna, the book traces the origins of tberfil, an art form that combines folkloric art with signwriting, and which was commonly seen on Malta’s old bus service. Its story starts at the dawn of the 20th century, and the book documents its development and crystallisation as an art form as it absorbed various styles and influences over the following 100 years. By covering the work of pioneering tberfilisti such as Alvaro Camilleri and later masters such as Bastjan Darmanin and Joe Farrugia, the resulting research showcases the various styles and aspects that define tberfil, from lettering to pinstriping, ornamentation to driver’s cabins.&nbsp;The book was officially launched at the Malta Book Festival 2025 in Ta’ Qali, and can be purchased at various points across the island and internationally (see below). Hand-crafted and containing modular touches, they can be combined in a range of different ways to create unique collections for living spaces of any kind. Inspired by the simple wooden toys of our childhood, Objekts are also designed to reignite the playful side in us. &nbsp; A further development on the Alphabeticon series of work that explored basic forms of visual communication, Objekts are created by Steven in collaboration with a carpenter. The series was successfully crowdfunded&nbsp;via Kickstarter in April 2018. The Objekts are now available from my shop and from selected shops worldwide.
