Steven Scicluna (Malta, 1984) is a graphic artist, author, researcher, illustrator and art director.
His interest in visual culture began as a young painter and graffiti artist while studying graphic design at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST). He later studied illustration at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) in the UK, and went on to research Vernacular Architecture at the University of Hong Kong. Since then, he has held various creative roles across Malta, London and Spain, including as an art director of brand in the tech industry, and currently divides his time between freelance creative direction, illustration and research.
Steven has also been involved in several projects that aim to connect creativity and community. He is a founding member and regular contributor to the Malta Community of Illustrators (MCOl), has organised festivals such as the N15 Street Art Festival in North London in 2015, and led an archival research initiative focused on the history of Maltese graphic art.
In 2025, he published the book ‘Tberfil: The art of Maltese vehicular decoration in the 20th century’, the result of an extensive research period that has helped define and establish the Maltese vernacular art form of tberfil.
As an artist, his work is inspired by the interplay between vernacular visual culture, natural heritage and personal mythology. He has held exhibitions worldwide, including solo exhibits such as Alphabeticon (London, 2015) and Contracompositions (Valencia, 2018). Between 2016 and 2020, he created and produced a series of modular, handcrafted wooden sculptures called Objekts following a successful Kickstarter campaign.
He currently resides in Sicily, where, together with his wife Sara, he is working on setting up a creative residency project centred around contemporary Mediterranean identities.
